Things to do

As avid divers, we feel confident that we know the best diving organizations on the island. Here are our picks:Maui Dreams Dive Company

For dive instruction and certification when you come to Maui, do yourself a favor and make Maui Dreams Dive Company in Kihei your local dive shop. Maui Dreams is a full service, 5 star P.A.D.I. shop that makes everyone feel like a local. Prices are reasonable and their instructors are some of the best Maui has to offer. They are one of the few dive operations that avoid the certification concept of dive instruction and they are environmentally conscious.

Mike Severns Diving If you are interested in doing some boat diving while on Maui, you should contact Pauline at Mike Severns Diving. There are many dive boats here but this one is number one in my book. When I pay to dive from a boat, I want the experience to be more than just another tourist boat going to the same old places. I also want to learn about the local marinelife. With well over 3000 Maui dives under my belt, I am still able to learn something new from Pauline on every dive. She is a marine Biologist, and an authority on Hawaiian nudibranchs. I also expect a high priority placed on my safety. With Mike Severns Diving, you get all this plus a fun crew.

For a great dive boat on the Westside, try Extended Horizons. This boat runs out to the neighbor island of Lanai and also visits the Carthaginian. Keep in mind that it can sometimes be a rough ride across the channel but dive sites like the Cathedrals along with a good possibility of dolphin sightings, make Lanai special place to dive and Extended Horizons is the best way to get there.

Hoover_fishbook

Many people ask what the best fish identification books for Hawaii are. Our personal favorites are Hawaii's Fishes by John P. Hoover, and for invertebrates, Hawaii's Sea Creatures by John P. Hoover. (These links to Barnes & Noble are for your convenience but the books are available at any bookseller)
